ibs-smart® for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D)
The ibs-smart test serves as a diagnostic aid for IBS by providing relevant immunological information about antibodies to cytothelial distending toxin B (CdtB) and vinculin. Post-infectious IBS-D (diarrhea-predominant) is likely caused by food-borne gastric infections known as “food poisoning.” The most common bacteria causing food poisoning are Shigella, Campylobacter, C. difficile, Salmonella, and E.coli.
Bacteria release a toxin called CdtB into the body which the immune system recognizes as foreign. Immune cells produce anti-CdtB antibodies which also recognize a naturally occurring protein in the body called vinculin. While the anti-CdtB antibodies are fighting the bacterial toxin, the anti-vinculin antibodies produce an auto-immune response leading to gut nerve damage and post-infection irritable bowel syndrome.
The ibs-smart test was optimized by ResearchDx scientists and performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay to assess circulating antibody levels anti-CdtB and anti-vinculin. The test does not provide an exclusive diagnosis of IBS and results should be interpreted in the context of the patient’s clinical and laboratory findings.

Methodology: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay is used to assess circulating antibody levels of CdtB and vinculin in patients exhibiting symptoms of IBS. The assay does not provide an exclusive diagnosis of IBS. Results should be interpreted in the context of the patient’s clinical and laboratory findings.
